Cetophin is an ancient god who cares little about his followers but can be enticed or appeased to aid those who invoke his name. He is the Lord of Deep Waters and absolute ruler of the Oceans of Traykon.
History
The earliest writings of Traykon mention Cetophin. He is the guardian of the deep and venerated by all those who live in the depths. As Traykon grew so did Cetophin and his power.
Little is known about what goes on in his realms. His worshipers are few on land but of those who make their living on the sea their numbers are impressive.
Relationships
Indifferent to most other deities, Cetophin has a complicated with Ebrim. The two dieties share some worshipers and offerings to one are often combined with offerings to the other. Followers of the two deities however do not work together and often come into conflict. There is no love between the deities but as Ebrim controls what goes on above the waves Cetophin is the absolute master of what goes on below.
Although not enemies, he often finds his followers at odds with those of Ina Po and Ulan because undead are often spawned in his domain. Cetophin has competative angst towards Aragon as the wars betneath the waves seldom draw the worship and power as those on land. Shahara dislikes Cetophin and his followers but the two deities seldom interact.
Appearance
Cetophin appears as a bloated humanoid covered in scales with a long, fish-like tail. His arms and legs end in webbed, wicked claws. A fish-like head sits atop the broad shoulders with a toothy maw ready to savage his enemies.
He also is known to alter his form into collossal versions of ocean predators. His favorites are a vicious gigantic shark and a collossal squid.
Servants
Sahuagin are the most devout servants of Cetophin. They are known to have multiple shrines in their towns and guard some of his most holy sites. There is a fanatacism amongst the Sahuagin as they see him not only as their patron but many see him as their progenitor.
Sharks are considered holy beasts and are thought to carry out his will. Large squid and octipi are also considered holy as Cetophin's most fiercesom manifestations.
Unique servants
Fraeb the Reincarnated: Fraeb was a Sahuagin Adept of some power. He was a devout follower of Cetophin and dedicated many great acts to the deity. He was slain in a confrontation with buccaneers during a raid. Despite the ignobility of his death, he was reincarnated in the form of a Dire Shark. Given a special boon by Cetophin, Fraeb is one of the most effective instrument of divine wrath.
Church Structure
The church of Cetophin is very decentralized with shrines and solitary practitioners or groups making up the majority of his faithful. The Sahuagin have a more formal worship of the god with small churches and multiple shrines per village. There is a Sahagin head of the church for the race who has loose power over their churches and followers within the race.
Worshipers
Aside from Sahuagin, many other aquatic creatures such as some Tritons and Merfolk worship Cetophin. Intelligent beasts of the deep often show him fealty and worship him in their own way.
On land, worshipers of Cetophin tend to be loners and outcasts. They live near or work around large bodies of water or the ocean. Sailors seldom worship Cetophin but instead make sacrifices to appease the god or seek luck for their voyages.
Clergy
Priests of Cetophin are often very erratic beings who do not mix well with large groups. They often wear dark blue robes with a black hem. Some wear black robes and carry a trident wherever they go. They tend shrines whenever they come across them and a few have made elaborate shrines that fall just short of being a full temple.
Temples and shrines
There is only one known Temple on the surface of Traykon while many exist beneath the waves. That temple is on the southern end of the Bay of Tears outside the village of Dalangal, a human fishing village known for deep water runs. There are hundreds of small shrines along the oceans and lakes of Traykon dedicated to Cetophin.
The Sahuagin have a temple dedicated to Cetophin in each of their towns. Multiple shrines exist in the towns as well as individual Sahuagin build small, familial shrines. These shrines are a mark of status and distinction amongst Sahuagin families. The main temple of Cetophin is located in the Sahuagin city of Kalhosua, the largest of the Sahuagin cities.
Shrines to Cetophin exist in many places under the waves and are found in various states of decay. Most of them have been created by aquatic races and are sporadically kept. Some few of the shrines were created by surface dwellers who sunk the shrines as an offering to Cetophin. Shrines that were inside of a sunken vessel often spontaneously raise the inhabitants as undead warders of the shrine.
Religious texts
The Way of the Deep is the only known religious text dedicated to Cetophin. It is a series of about three dozen scrolls containing the wisdom of Cetophin expressed as short allegories. The text themselves are not magical but they are sacred to the faithful so are treated with reverence by any who come across copies.
Holy sites
The Great Rift is a large depression in the ocean whose bottom has never been found. It is so deep, even the Sahaugin do not dare it's depths. Faithful will often throw offerings into the rift dedicated to Cetophin. It is believed the deity lives in the depths of the rift and from there watches over his domain.
Holidays
There are no Holy Days of Cetophin. His priests honor no holiday nor special day of worship.
Organizations
There are no known organizations dedicated to the worship of Cetophin. He has no paladins or special advocates.
